César Alierta, born in 1945, is a graduate in Law from the University of Zaragoza and has an MBA from the University of Columbia (New York). In 2000 he became the head of Telefónica. He is a member of the Executive Commission of Altadis, and is on the Board of Directors of O2 and of the Columbia Business School Board of Overseers. Telefónica is one of the world leaders in the telecommunications sector with 100 million clients, of which 55% are in Latin America. It is the fourth largest operator in the world in terms of the number of clients, with the acquisition of Bell South in Latin America. It has a significant presence in 15 countries with operational activity in 40. It is the number one in Spain, in Brazil (in a joint venture with Portugal Telecom), in Peru and in Chile and the second largest operator in Argentina and México. Telefónica is the sixth largest in the world in terms of stock Exchange capitalization, it has 20 listed companies, of which the main ones are Telefónica Móviles, Telefónica Publicidad e Información and Terra Lycos.
